Fake news are one of the most debated issues in international politics today, given their potential to undermine principles and values which have founded western liberal democracies for centuries, first and foremost freedom of expression. The seminar, organized within the realm of the Ph.D. program in Global Studies. Justice, Rights, Politics and in collaboration with Microsoft, aims at achieving a twofold objective: on one hand, showing – with the help of technologies developed in Redmond – how social media users react to fake news; on the other, once having described the essential dynamics of the phenomenon, providing an overview of the legislation adopted by the EU and its Member States to counter online disinformation, in order to understand whether the path taken could ensure the needed balance between the relevant rights.

Le fake news sono al centro del dibattito politico internazionale, in virtù della loro capacità di mettere in crisi quei principi e valori su cui le democrazie liberali si sono per secoli fondate: uno su tutti, la libertà di espressione. Il seminario, organizzato dal corso di dottorato in Global Studies. Justice, Rights, Politics con la collaborazione di Microsoft, ha un duplice obiettivo: in primo luogo, mostrare – tramite l’utilizzo delle tecnologie elaborate dall’azienda di Redmond – quale sia il rapporto tra l’utenza dei social media e le fake news; in secondo luogo, una volta intese le dinamiche sottese al fenomeno, illustrare gli strumenti di contrasto alle stesse messi in campo dall’Unione Europea e dai suoi Stati membri, al fine di comprendere se le strade intraprese siano o meno quelle più idonee a garantire il necessario bilanciamento tra i diritti in gioco.
