MediaLaws is pleased to share the call for papers for the special issue of Technological Forecasting and Social Change entitled “AI for whom and by whom? Cultural bias and the institutional and social shaping of large language models”.
The special issue invites scholars to critically examine Large Language Models (LLMs) as socio-technical systems shaped by cultural, institutional, linguistic, political, and economic dynamics, with particular attention to bias, representation, governance, digital colonialism, and the inclusion of diverse knowledge systems.
The call welcomes empirical and interdisciplinary contributions examining how LLMs are developed, governed, and deployed across different institutional and regional settings.
Topics of interest include: cultural bias and knowledge extractivism, comparative analyses of national and regional AI ecosystems, the role of public research organisations and universities in AI development, and participatory and socially accountable approaches to the design and governance of AI systems.
