Minister Pat Rabbitte T.D., the Irish Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources will chair a one day meeting of the TTE Council (Telecoms) in Luxembourg this afternoon, during which EU Ministers for Communications will particularly focus on the Digital Single Market.

Speaking this morning about the importance of the meeting, Minister Rabbitte said: “Today’s Council is an opportunity to examine and reflect on the progress the Presidency and the Council has made over the last six months. We noted at the beginning of our six month tenure that at a time of economic uncertainty the completion of key telecommunication dossiers would help drive us on the path to recovery. In keeping with the priorities of the Irish Presidency – stability, jobs and growth – today’s Telecoms Council meeting will host an important debate on the Digital Single Market and the progress that has been made towards its realisation.

“In all our deliberations we must place the consumer and the business person to the forefront of our minds. The digital economy across Europe is a driver of jobs but we must put in place the right framework so that it can be accessed and used, safely, on a daily basis by all of our citizens. Businesses and consumers need to be assured that when they are within this on-line market that there are safeguards and adequate protections in place-which is why we have pushed forward with and placed a high priority on electronic identification and why we are discussing network and information security across the Union.” Here to read more.
